With the summer holiday season upon us it is easy to pack and travel with the best of intentions to continue a cleansing whole foods diet and exercise regimen. Those resolutions often crumble as quickly as sipping the first glass of champagne offered on the plane. Yes, even the Detox Diva is not immune to the lures of beautiful bread, amazing traditional wines and rich food. On our recent trip to Georgia, I discovered some amazing organic red wines, ate a gazpacho that would bring a Spaniard to his knees, an apple strudel that would wow any self-respecting German, and plenty of chicken with walnut sauce, pork shashlik, cheese stuffed katchapuri, and dumplings……oh the dumplings….. And did I mention that Tbilisi has a new Buddha Bar???
Needless to say every opportunity to eat a cleansing meal was passed in the dust in favor of delicious culinary hedonism. Rome wasn’t built in a day and healthy foundations weren’t crumbled in 9 days. I ate beautiful locally produced meats, organic eggs, lots of home grown vegetables and fruits and bread….. bread….bread…. homemade, fresh, toe curlingly mouth-watering bread. As much as I recommend that we cut back on wheat consumption because so much is consumed on a Standard American Diet, if you ever make it to Georgia, unless you are a true Celiac, eat the bread!
So after 9 days, with the scale registering 1 1/2 lbs. than when I left, and that uncomfortable overindulgent feeling in some very important clothes, it’s time to practice what I preach and do the holiday detox.
